Cilowen Organic Cheese

To complement the robust and unique flavour of the Llanboidy Cheeses we developed the Cilowen Organic farmhouse cheese range at the end of 2000 using fresh local organic milk.

After combining certain characteristics of a number of traditional recipes and numerous tastings of the 16 experimental batches made by our cheesemaker Alice, we eventually settled for batch 8.

We knew we were on a winner when the cheese won a Gold Award and the Best Organic Cheese Class at the 2001 British Cheese Awards. It then went on to win  the John Webb Trophy for the Best New Cheese marketed in the UK in 2001 and has continued winning awards ever since

Experts verdict:
"young and creamy, yet gently crumbly, with an exciting fresh flavour, a subtle aroma and a stimulating taste with a hint of...."

We couldn't stop them ..... so perhaps you should decide for yourselves !

Soil Association organic StandardSoil Association organic StandardCilowen Organic is a hand-made, hard pressed cheese and its distinctive truckle shape is enhanced by its own natural rind. It has been granted full Soil Association Accreditation, uses vegetarian rennet and is free from any additives. It is matured for about 3/4 months to develop its own subtle and lingering flavours - it can then be equally enjoyed , either with decent bread or used in cooking where its flavour, aroma and consistency complement many dishes. Emily our youngest daughter and her friends love it with pasta.

Two new cheeses have now joined Cilowen Organic :-

Cilowen Organic with Leeks – leeks are added to curd at cheese making allowing a subtle flavour of sweetness and onion to develop during maturing – a young creamy and moist, hard-pressed cheese
A cheery cheese with a lingering taste – ideal in sauces or munched on its own
Soil Association certified

Cilowen Smoked
- a subtle cheese made with organically produced milk which is smoked over oak chippings at a local smokery in Cardiganshire. Its evocative  aroma and taste are reminiscent of wood fires


Superb with houmous on crackers or pitta bread

Although this is basically an organic cheese it can not be approved by the soil association because we have chosen an uncertified organic smokery
